1. How old do I have to be to join?
Applicants must be a minimum of 17 years of age on day of entry but an age waiver may be sought for Army applicants entering the ADF through ADFA at 16 years of age 2. Do I have to do any kind of testing? The application process to join the ADF requires you to complete a series of aptitude tests including verbal, spatial and numerical ability and a general maths test. Some jobs may also require you to complete additional testing at a later date. |

To be eligible for admission to ADFA, applicants must have completed Year 12 and obtained an entrance rank high enough to qualify for entry to the relevant degree program.
Royal Military College Duntroon
You must have completed Year 12 with passes in English and three other subjects. Or you may be in your final year and expect to reach these levels.
4. Can I do my Years 11 or 12 in the military?
Yes, the Navy, Army and Air Force promote the educational advancement of all personnel regardless of avenue of entry.

7. How do I join the ADFA
ADFA has a unique dual application process. To apply for ADFA, you must complete both processes shown below and you should do them concurrently. As it's a competitive process that can take up to 12 months, we recommend starting your application in Year

8. Is their a Height requirement?
The minimum height requirement for entry into the ADF, without shoes, is 152cm. Pilot and Aircrew candidates are also required to meet specific anthropometric measurements. 9. What do you have to give back? ADFA midshipman or officer cadet, you’ll be required to serve for an Initial Minimum Period of Service. This is to ensure the Services get an acceptable return for investing in your training. Essentially it is a period of time you will be required to serve until you can voluntarily resign. The length of IMPS varies between jobs. Air Force and Army Officer Cadets can resign at any time within the first two years and Navy Midshipmen can resign at any time within the first year without having an IMPS. 10 What happens if I only completed Year 9? The minimum education requirement for service in the ADF is Year 10; if you have not achieved this standard a Defence Recruiter will be able to discuss alternative options with you. 11 What kind of Training do i have to do in the ADFA The academic and military training at the ADFA Canberra ACT, takes three years to complete. After graduation, you will attend the Royal Military College, Duntroon, for 12 months to further enhance your military training. |
12 What are the Medical & Fitness Requirements?
To be enlisted or appointed, you must be medically and physically fit for entry to your chosen occupation. This is partially assessed from the completion of an extensive questionnaire covering your medical history, followed by a physical examination Army entry consists of push-ups, sit-ups and a shuttle run. Male requirement: 15 Push-ups, 45 Sit-ups (feet held), 7.5 Shuttle run score Female requirement: 8 Push-ups, 45 Sit-ups (feet held), 7.5 Shuttle run score For Special Forces Direct Recruiting Scheme (SFDRS) candidates, the PFA standards are: Male requirement: 30 Push-ups, 60 Sit-ups, 10.1 Shuttle run score 13 Do I get paid at the ADFA? In your first year you will receive a salary package of $39,525 (excluding superannuation) which increases with each year of study. You will not have to pay tuition fees and the cost of most of your textbooks is covered. You will then be paid a salary package of more than $80,000 per year after you graduate and complete your specific employment training. 14 Am I covered if I get injured during training? Yes, all personnel are covered under the Military Compensation Scheme . 15 Do I have to live at ADFA? Midshipmen and officer cadets live in accommodation blocks on base while they are attending ADFA. Everyone lives on base during the first six weeks |
